Key Considerations for Cooling in AI Data Centers
A practical procurement checklist for rack-level liquid cooling hardware: define the operating conditions, interfaces and acceptance requirements before comparing components.
Start with the system requirements
A hardware inquiry is easier to review when it identifies where the component sits in the cooling loop. A rack manifold, server connection and CDU interface each have different installation constraints. Send the relevant drawing or connection schedule together with the project scope.
Keep thermal sizing and system performance requirements in the customer-approved design. A component quotation should state which parts are included and which system decisions remain with the design team.
Specify the coolant and operating envelope
Identify the coolant formulation and concentration, normal and maximum temperatures, working pressure and the required flow at the connection. These are separate requirements; a pressure rating alone does not define the suitability of a component.
Coolant compatibility needs to be considered for every wetted material, including seals and hose liners. Request compatibility information for the actual coolant and temperature range, rather than relying on a broad material name.
Review connections as an installed assembly
Confirm port locations, thread standards, sealing methods and the exact mating connector. Where quick disconnects are used, identify the series and mating halves. Do not assume two parts will mate simply because they look similar.
Include the space needed to connect, disconnect and route the hose. Ask for flow and pressure-drop information at the intended operating conditions; the connector belongs in the system pressure budget.
Agree what will be checked before shipment
Ask the supplier to quote the inspection and test scope explicitly. If a leak or pressure test is required, specify the method, conditions and acceptance criteria for review. Avoid treating an unspecified test as proof of system readiness.
A useful handover package can include the approved drawing revision, material information, agreed inspection results and component identification. The exact documentation should be confirmed before the order.
Information to include in an RFQ
- Cooling-loop location and included hardware
- Coolant formulation, concentration and operating conditions
- Port schedule, mating connectors and installation constraints
- Quantity, delivery timing and required inspection or test records
