PROJECT NOTES / TECHNICAL NOTE

From prototype to series production

An approved prototype is a useful milestone. Repeat production also needs a controlled technical baseline, agreed inspection and a clear process for changes.

Define what the prototype has demonstrated

Record the purpose of the sample and the outcome of the customer review. Dimensional acceptance, assembly evaluation and application testing answer different questions.

List any unresolved requirements and any deviations accepted only for the sample. A temporary concession should not silently become the production standard.

Freeze the approved technical package

Confirm the production drawing revision, model, material and finishing requirements. Update documents to incorporate approved changes before issuing the order.

Use the approved package as the reference for quotation and inspection. Keep superseded versions distinguishable so they are not reused for a later batch.

Review the production quantity and inspection scope

Provide the initial batch quantity, anticipated repeat demand and required delivery timing. Ask the supplier to review the manufacturing and supply route for that volume.

Agree the measurements, sampling or individual checks and reports required for the production order. The sample inspection package may need to be reviewed for a larger batch.

Control changes during repeat supply

Define how proposed substitutions, drawing changes or process changes will be submitted and approved. Keep the applicable revision and approvals associated with the order.

When a repeat order is placed, reconfirm the baseline rather than relying on a verbal request to repeat the previous batch.

Make the first production handover useful

Check quantity, identification, packing and agreed documentation before release. Capture customer feedback from the first batch while the details are still easy to trace.

This feedback can inform the next order, but changes should still return to the controlled requirements and approval process.

Production release checklist

  • Recorded sample review and outstanding actions
  • Approved production revision and material requirements
  • Batch quantity, repeat demand and delivery target
  • Inspection plan and documentation scope
  • Written change approval and part identification requirements
