LIQUID COOLING / TECHNICAL NOTE
Key considerations for liquid cooling manifolds
A manifold inquiry should define the connection layout, operating conditions and verification requirements as one coherent hardware package.
Begin with the port schedule
Provide the overall envelope, mounting locations and a schedule for every port. Identify inlet and outlet connections, branch quantity, connection standard and required orientation.
For an existing installation, include the mating hardware and available space. A port that can be machined may still be difficult to access once the assembly is installed.
Define operating conditions
State the coolant formulation, temperature range, working pressure and required flow conditions. Include any customer-defined test requirements separately from normal operation.
For multi-branch assemblies, the system design team should define the expected flow requirements and acceptance criteria. Geometry alone does not demonstrate that each branch receives its intended flow.
Review all wetted materials
Identify the manifold body, seals, fittings and connected hose or tubing materials. Compatibility should be reviewed for the actual coolant and operating range across the assembly.
Request clarification when part of the wetted material specification is missing. A general statement that a component is suitable for water cooling is not the same as approval for a particular fluid formulation.
Treat connectors and routing as part of the review
Confirm exact mating connectors and sealing methods. Provide the clearance needed for connection, disconnection and hose routing, especially around closely spaced ports.
Ask for relevant connection flow and pressure-drop information. The manifold and its connected hardware should be evaluated within the customer’s overall flow design.
Agree the verification package
Define required dimensional checks and any leak or pressure test in the enquiry. The method, conditions and acceptance criteria should be agreed before manufacture.
The delivered records should correspond to the supplied assembly and approved revision. Component-level checks should not be described as a completed validation of the entire cooling system.
Manifold RFQ checklist
- Layout drawing, port schedule and mounting envelope
- Coolant, temperature, pressure and flow requirements
- Body and other wetted material specifications
